Live Like an Ametur... a Lesson in Humility

The RMS Titanic was an Olympic-class passenger liner owned by British shipping company White Star Line and built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, United Kingdom. For her time, she was the largest passenger steamship in the world.

On the night of April 14, 1912, during the ship’s maiden voyage, Titanic hit an iceberg and sank two hours and forty minutes later, early on 15 April 1912. The sinking resulted in the deaths of 1,517 people, making it one of the most deadly peacetime maritime disasters in history. The high casualty rate was due in part to the fact that, although complying with the regulations of the time, the ship did not carry enough lifeboats for everyone aboard. The ship had a total lifeboat capacity of 1,178 people, although her capacity was 3,547. A disproportionate number of men died due to the women-and-children-first protocol that was followed.

The Titanic used some of the most advanced technology available at the time and was, after the sinking, popularly believed to have been described as “unsinkable”. It was a great shock to many that, despite the extensive safety features and experienced crew, the Titanic sank. The frenzy on the part of the media about Titanic‘s famous victims, the legends about the sinking, the resulting changes to maritime law, and the discovery of the wreck have contributed to the continuing interest in, and notoriety of, the Titanic.

Today is TITANIC REMEMBRANCE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Did you know that she was never advertised as "unsinkable"?  According to Snopes, no advertisement ever existed.  But we've all heard about the female passenger who asked the famous question of the deck hand, "Is this ship really unsinkable?"  The deck hand replied, "Yes, lady.  God Himself could not sink this ship."

Noah’s Ark, according to chapters 6-9 of the Book of Genesis, was a large vessel built by Noah, at God’s command. It saved Noah, his family, and a representation of the world’s animals from a great flood.

The Genesis narrative tells how God, grieved by the corruption of the Earth, decided to destroy all life with a flood. However, Noah, a righteous man who “found grace in the eyes of God”, was instructed to prepare for this flood by building an ark and to retreat to it with his family and with male and female representatives of various animals. As the flood waters rose, those sheltered inside the Ark survived as the rest of humanity and animal life perished. As the waters reached their height, God “remembered Noah”, the waters abated, and dry land reappeared. Noah and the animals left the Ark, Noah offered sacrifice, and God vowed never again to destroy the Earth in this manner.

If I may be allowed to insert a little play on words here, I like to say that "God Himself would not let her sink."  Even if the Ark was built in a sub-standard way, with God at the helm, she would not sink because that was not her purpose.

The older I get, the more I realize that everything in this life is fragile and fleeting.  We are literally not guaranteed anything in this life and need to be thankful to God for every good thing that comes along, and know that if something bad comes along, God's got that under control as well.

When a person comes to the conclusion that good health is not automatic and it requires effort and determination to keep it, there comes a certain renewed sense of purpose along with a positive attitude.  The thought process changes from "I have to eat this salad because I must deprive myself of the better tasting pizza" to "I want to eat this salad because I am protecting my cells and making my body stronger to fight off cancer cells."

If those passengers on the Titanic would have known their fate, do you think they would have boarded the ship???  Um...  I don't think so!

Yet - we know through research that we have the ability to help our cells stay strong through our diet, but many of us choose the pizza over the salad because heck yeah it tastes better!  The fact is, the dark leafy vegetables are what make you more healthy.  A salad can be really good!  It doesn't have to be just dark green leafy lettuce, you know!  Doctor that salad up with stuff.  Change it up or you will get bored with it.

A good salad can have as much variety as a pizza.  There are just as many salad combinations (if not more) than there are for pizza.  I would actually suggest that you eat one slice of pizza with a large salad - how about that?  You're getting the alkaline in the salad and probably the bulk of your 20% of acidic would be in one slice of pizza.  Yes - just one slice!  Fill up on the salad and lemon water!

See - I'm not unreasonable.  I don't think it should be a pizza that is loaded down with a lot of junk meat.  I'm not sure how anyone can eat pepperoni - that has got to be the most greasy meat ever - and it's processed and sodium-laden.  Choose a veggie pizza or something with white chicken on it.

No, you can not have a soda with it!  I knew you would ask me that.  You already know how I feel about that chemical crap.  Water, lemon, lime, seltzer, Stevia for sweetener.  Homemade soda - that's as close as I'll get to allowing soda.

As you take this lifestyle minute by minute, walk humbly.  If you have a success, don't make a big deal about it.  You and I both know how easy it can all unravel again.  You can do a little happy dance - just do it quietly.  You can shout a "woot" to yourself - it's okay.

I make no boasts that I am unsinkable - um...  nope.  Just taking this life and this lifestyle one little baby step at a time and trying to get my health back - that's all.

So far in April while taking part in a 30-day weight loss challenge, I've dropped 3 pounds.  This is good - progress is always encouraging!  It would be nice if my facebook account was not suspended so I could communicate in the group.  But I'm doing the work I said I would do - eating right and a half hour of exercise - proper hydration and plenty of rest.

This is a great combination and seems to be working for me.  I'm not bragging, I'm just grateful!  I love life and want to keep living a good quality of life.
